Spindelegger receives Archbishops from Syria
Vienna, 25 April 2012 – Austrian Vice Chancellor and Foreign Minister Michael Spindelegger received the Syrian Orthodox archbishops Mor Eustathius Matta Roham of Jezira and Euphrat and Mor Silvanus Petros Issa Al-Nemeh of Homs and Hama today. The two archbishops, who are staying in Austria upon invitation of CSI (Christian Solidarity International), informed the Foreign Minister about the current precarious political and religious situation in Syria.
The Foreign Minister stressed how important it is that the cease-fire demanded by the UN Security Council be observed by all parties and that the Syrian government withdraws its heavy weapons from populated areas. Only then can a political dialogue begin, aiming at the formation of a free and democratic state under the rule of law. Spindelegger: “The UN observer mission in Syria is the first spark of hope for a proper cease-fire and for an end to the violence against civilians. The Syrian government and its security apparatus must finally show that it is really interested in de-escalation and transition to a political process.”
