Lopatka: "Austria pushes international development agenda ahead"
State Secretary discusses continuation of the Rio process with UN Under-Secretary General
Vienna, 17 December 2012 - State Secretary Reinhold Lopatka met for an exchange of ideas with Wu Hongbo, Under-Secretary General in the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, who has been in Vienna to attend the Vienna Policy Dialogue on the role of women in the development process.
"Combating poverty must remain a central issue of the international community of states", Lopatka said. "Hence it is even more important that an effective successor tool to the Millennium Development Goals is developed for the period after 2015. The coming development agenda must address all issues of sustainable development and development financing; all of these must be included in a catalogue of objectives. Together with the Austrian Minister for Environmental Affairs I have campaigned with EU High Representative Ashton and the EU's Commissioners for Development and Environment, Andris Piebalgs and Janez Poto?nik to convince them that the Union should pursue the same approach", the State Secretary said.
Lopatka and USG Wu also discussed the issue of strengthening the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) of which Austria will be a member in 2013 and 2014. "I am in favour of discussing the further development of the Rio+20 process and the post-2015 development agenda in the ECOSOC. With the Development Cooperation Forum (DCF), the ECOSOC offers a platform for transparent dialogue between governments and representatives from all groups of society - science, business and civil society. It is very important to me that all relevant stakeholders are involved in the future process", Lopatka said.
Austria and the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs under USG Wung Hongbo have been cooperating closely for many years and have organised several joint events on issues of international development cooperation in Vienna, one of the UN headquarters. "The Vienna Policy Dialogue on the role of women in the development process contributes to strengthening Vienna's role as a conference venue and seat of one of the four UN headquarters", the State Secretary concluded.
