Waldner: Cooperation with Mexico should be continued at the multilateral level
Vienna, 29 August 2011 – “Based on a closely knit network of political, economic and cultural ties, the relations between Mexico and Austria are particularly friendly,” underlined State Secretary Wolfgang Waldner at a meeting with Mexican Deputy Foreign Minister for Multilateral Affairs and Human Rights, Juan Manuel Gómez-Robledo.
“We are united by a clear commitment to multilateralism. This applies above all to cooperation in such fields as the protection of human rights, disarmament issues and the fight against climate change. Since the time we both were in the UN Security Council, the cooperation with Deputy Foreign Minister Gómez-Robledo has been particularly intensive. We want to continue to build on that,” said Waldner.
Due to Austria’s and Mexico’s current membership of the UN Human Rights Council there are also opportunities for cooperation concerning Austrian priorities like protection of journalists, the rights of children, protection of freedom of faith, conscience and creed, and freedom of religious minorities, added the State Secretary. “The pictures and reports from Libya and Syria demonstrate every day the dangers and restrictions journalists are exposed to in their work. Our initiative is mainly directed at the prosecution of those who assault representatives of the media and at the prevention of such assaults,” concluded the State Secretary.
