Presidency
Presidency of the Security Council
Starting in alphabetical order, each member is holding the Council Presidency for one month. The president is formulating the monthly Work Program and organizing the meetings of the Council. He also formally leads the debates but is not expected to play more of a key role than the other members by taking the initiative in debates. However, the President can devote particular attention to a specific topic, developed in coordination with the other members of the Council. The president is responsible for press communication and, in consensus with the Council, formulates the Presidential Statements presented to the press.
Austria held the presidency of the Security Council throughout November 2009. The order of the presidencies in 2010 will be:
January - China
February - France
March - Gabun
April - Japan
May - Lebanon
June - Mexico
July - Nigeria
August - Russia
September - Turkey
October - Uganda
