Alongside Earth’s material existence stands man’s story: multi-layered, ever changing and often contradictory, HISTORY.
With technological advancements rushing towards us at an ever-increasing rate, history takes on a new significance. Processes, objects and subjects become redundant within a decade rather than a generation. No longer can one generation advise the next.
For artists the traditional process of printmaking has been superseded by digital technologies with silk screens exchanged for computer screens. Direct, physical contact with the medium via the transfer of pigment is exchanged for the transference of information via a computer. The paintbrush, which was a stock item of artists – is more a tool of choice than a stock in trade.
In this exhibition I look at redundant processes through the art process. Layers of plastic become my pigment. Plastic is where history is stored now – the disc having replaced the traditional archive cabinet.
Contrasting what is in flux against what is certain, I also use Earth’s composite materials through sculpture. Clay, rock, salt and sand are employed to create installations that will be symbolically swept away when their presence is no longer required. The speed of technological growth is metaphorically set against the tempo of the Earth. For HISTORY, these contradictory states are put in direct contrast to each other. Jane McAdam Freud
