Information in English
(PLEASE NOTE that some documents you can download here have not been changed since the EP-elections 2004 and are still valid.)
EU citizens other than Austrian nationals, permanently residing in Austria may participate in electing Austrian MEPs as well as may stand as a candidate in Austria. To this end, an application to the municipality (Gemeinde) of residence (Hauptwohnsitz!) is necessary (blue form: "Antrag auf Eintragung in die Europa-Wählerevidenz für Unionsbürger(innen),
die innerhalb des Bundesgebietes ihren Hauptwohnsitz haben
und die österreichische Staatsbürgerschaft nicht besitzen"). Once such an application is submitted, participation in electing MEPs of the country of nationality is excluded.
Translations of terms used on the "blue form" are available in:
Български Česky Dansk Eesti keel Ελληνικά English Español Français Italiano Latviešu valodā
Lietuvių kalbą Magyar Malti Nederlands Popoisku Português Româna Slovenčina Slovenščino
Suomi Svenska
…
Using your "Wahlkarte", you can cast your vote EITHER on election day at any polling station in Austria OR by post from within or without Austria, even before elections day, ie as soon as you received your "Wahlkarte":
Together with the blue application, the following application form »Europa-Wähleranlageblatt B« has to be handed in.
A translation into 19 languages, of the terms and indications used in the application forms is available at the austrian municipalities.
For more details please contact your Austrian municipality of permanent residence. For adresses, phone and facsimile numbers as well as email addresses of all Austrian municipalities see "Kontakte (Österreich)".
In case that you are unable to cast your vote at your local polling station, you can apply for a "Wahlkarte" (election package including the ballot) at your municipality. Using your "Wahlkarte", you can cast your vote on election day at any polling station in Austria or even abroad. For the latter, see "Stimmabgabe" (only in German).
Those EU citizens of non-Austrian nationality resident in Austria who wish to elect their national MEPs - instead of Austrian MEPs - may contact their national election authorities or "consulates/embassies in Austria".
